For educators who are not able to attend our summer workshops, the Pisgah Forest Institute at Brevard College presents.

Distance Learning Workshop for Earth and Environmental

For Middle and High School Educators

February 16 - April 14, 2008

The distance learning workshop is designed for educators of grades 6 through 12 and will focus on the topics of geology, ecology, water, and air quality. This workshop follows the same outline and covers the same topics as the Earth and Environmental Science for Middle and High School Educators workshop that we present during the summer. The distance learning workshop will provide participants with background information, lessons and activities, as well as multimedia-rich learning strategies that include fun, interactive, educational games, video streams, a discussion board, and other web-based resources.

dlThe workshop will begin with participants gathering at Brevard College with the PFI staff. This orientation meeting will run from 10 am till 2 pm (lunch provided) on Saturday, February 16th, and will cover the use of the distance learning web-site, how and when to complete assignments, and a chance to meet other participants.

Workshop participants are eligible to receive up to four Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits based on forty plus workshop contact hours as well as criteria III credit in the North Carolina Environmental Educator’s (NCEE) Certification Program. In addition, the course may be taken for (3) 300 level undergraduate college credits through Brevard College. Contact PFI for more details!

The workshop will use a modular or thematic approach to explore the earth and environmental science topics of: geology, flora and fauna, water, and air quality. Participants will be asked to examine some of the topics of earth and environmental science first through the background information that is provided on the distance learning workshop web-site. Upon completion of this background information, participants will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of the various topics addressed through the use of weekly on-line quizzes.

In addition to the weekly quizzes, participants will be required to review one of the many lessons that are associated with the week’s material, by filling out a weekly lesson review form.  A final culminating project will be due on the last day of the workshop.  The final project will be a lesson that is submitted by you on any of the topics that are covered throughout the workshop.  This lesson can be any type of lesson you could do with students: an activity, a lab, a web quest, a project, etc.  Participants should expect to devote approximately five hours per week to this workshop for a total of 40 hours, which is equivalent to time spent in our week long summer version of this workshop.
